A Detailed Listing of the 1933 British Mt. Everest Expedition

EV33-M1

In 1933 the British launched their 4th Mt Everest expedition. This expd used a new route to the Rongbuk glacier basecamp traveling north out of Gangtok, Sikkim to enter Tibet. This route skipped Yatung and Pharijong. As a result, the postal collection point was moved to Gangtok.

The mail from the expedition received the new three ring expedition marking. In addition, the expedition member initialed the envelope to add further control to the use of the expedition mail. Mail runners were hired that were familiar with the route who helped ensure timely movement of the mail.

Unlike the 1924 expedition, souvenir mail did not seem to be the priority.
