Düsseldorf!! Named so because it is a Dorf (town) located on the
Düssel river, is also the largest dorf in Germany. Düsseldorf
is the seat for the Government of Northrheinwestfalia and is also considered
the richest city in Germany. The Altstadt (old city) of Düsseldorf
is located along the Rhein river where many people spend their summer
evenings and weekends. The Altstadt is set up as a pedestrian area and
has over 260 various international restaurants and pubs. Besides the restaurants
and pubs, Altstadt hosts many outdoor fairs such as wine, jazz, Christmas,
modern music, and many others. During the summer, Altstadt also provides
outdoor movies along the Rhein. Düsseldorf also hosts over 18 museums,
many theaters, opera, chateaus, and many large and varied parks. Go to
http://www.duesseldorf-altstadt.de/
to see some excellent views of the Altstadt.
When it comes to shopping, Düsseldorf is the place to be. Affectionately
referred to as the ‘Kö’ , Düsseldorf’s Königsallee with its elegant shopping
arcades is one of the world’s most beautiful boulevards: the catwalk of
the latest fashion trends ... one kilometer of seeing and being seen
... sauntering in front of an interested public on the terraces under
the chestnut trees.
In the south of Düsseldorf there is a very special sight: Benrath Chateau,
built over 200 years ago as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the
Elector Karl Theodor. The unique ensemble of castle and park is one of
the most significant of its type. Go to http://www.stiftung-schloss-und-park-benrath.de/
to see some wonderful views of the Chateau.

Our first home after arriving in Dusseldorf, a hotel room for a month next
to the AMS building. |
Where
we spent most of our time. Work!! This is the AMS building in Dusseldorf.
|
It was always easy to keep track of the tram arriving from Eddie's window
at work. Being at the end of the line was nice. It was usually there long
enough to run and catch it. |
And just who is the guy with the long hair?!? Ya, that's right! Eddie, and
it got longer! |
The U77, our tram to the town center and to connections to home. |
This is our house in Dusseldorf. It was called a row house because there
are three units in the building. Our unit was on the right and our front
door entered off of the driveway |
Here's the back of the house. Much more inviting looking than the front,
but that was typical for Germany. Our landlord, who lived in the middle
unit, took incredible care of the gardens. |
Another view of the gardens and the grill. |
